It is pretty rare that I send out an update more than monthly, but we have a lot going on that I wanted to share with you.
First, I want to announce the commencement of FORS-SC! This is our first “division” of FORS that will be lead in South Carolina by Laurie McGinness and Amy Soesbee. Amy is our webmaster and is married to a Greenville Co., SC deputy and Laurie’s boyfriend is with the Travelers Rest, SC PD! Amy and Laurie will begin focusing on “MOVEOVERSC” in an effort to educate motorists about SC’s Move Over Law as well as work with legislators to strengthen it. Best of luck Amy and Laurie! Lives will be saved because of their efforts!
Next, we have recently joined www.ibakesale.com, an online shopping website that allows for “cash back” from your purchases to be donated to FORS! When you shop on this website, rather than receiving “cash back” for your purchases, the “cash” will be donated to us! Thank you in advanced for signing up!
Speaking of donations…..WE NEED YOUR HELP! Our efforts rely solely on individual donations! We really need your assistance in order for us to continue saving lives! The end of 2007 is just around the corner, and you need to get your tax write-offs for the year! FORS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization! All donations are tax deductible! You can either mail your donation to the address below OR go online to http://www.f-o-r-s.com/home/donate to make an online donation via Paypal! Please, we really need your help!
I am also looking for a few volunteers in western North Carolina who would be willing to organize a fundraiser on behalf of FORS. We have some ideas already in place, or you can come up with your own. We really are looking for folks who could manage, organize and run the fundraiser. Please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested. We would love to get a group of volunteers together to work on this!
In the next week or so, we will be looking to purchase a laptop computer for FORS. If your business has a laptop that can be donated to FORS and could be used as a tax deduction, we would be grateful. Otherwise, we have found an inexpensive Dell.
If you have not had the chance, be sure to visit our website. These updates are posted on the site and allow for comments, etc. In addition, in the video and media section, we are always looking for photos to post. E-mail me your struck-by photos for submission (no fatalities will be posted)! We are also working on a few new webpages for the site…Educating Motorists, U.S. Move Over Laws, Move Over Store and MoveOverSC! Keep an eye out for these new pages…coming soon!
An update to North Carolina’s Move Over Law….The current NC Move Over Law GS 120-57 states that “public service vehicles” (aka tow truck operators) are only covered under the Move Over Law if they are called to a scene by a motorist or law enforcement officer. The newly amended law (House Bill 563 - effective January 2008) deletes the requirement that they have to be “called to the scene.” The public service vehicles will now be covered under the law and “on the scene” regardless of the venue in which they arrived.
A final note…On Monday, two sections of Tennessee interstate were dedicated to two fallen troopers, Todd Larkins and Samuel Holcomb. Both troopers were killed during traffic stops. Todd’s wife, Alicia, has been incredibly instrumental in promoting the Move Over Law in Tennessee. We can hope any future signage across the U.S. will be promoting the Move Over Law, not another lost life.
For the Larkins and Holcomb families as well as the hundreds of others who have needlessly lost loved ones on our nation’s highways…Move Over and Slow Down…Our lives depend on it!
