How to fix a flat tire by yourself

Most people have a roadside assistance plan through either their cell phone provider or car insurance company, but who wants to wait for someone else to show up, usually 30 minutes or more for most tow companies, and wait for them to change or fix the tire? Anyone can fix a flat tire if they are prepared and have the knowledge. One suggestion is to keep a can of Fix-A-Flat, or similar product, readily available within the vehicle. Another option is to purchase a tire-plugging kit, often less than 10 at most automotive stores. These kits provide the rubber plugs, and the tool to insert them into the tire. The tool has an opening at the tip through which the plug is stabilized so it can be put into the hole in the tire. Then the person can insert the plug into the hole in the tire without having to remove the tire. From there, all one has to do is put air back into the tire with a portable air compressor. A bicycle pump will work just as well but takes a little longer. Now the tire is fixed, and the driver can be on his or her way.
